Whenever I’m in a pinch and need to throw something together quickly to entertain guests, my go to is always puff pastry. It is such a versatile vessel for both sweet and savory fillings. I love how creative one can get with the variety of shapes, folds or cuts that can transform the pastry from a flat sheet into a culinary masterpiece!

On this occasion I was entertaining my kids and a few of their friends. Their request was for me to make their favorite Ham and Cheese spirals for an after school snack. I am not one to turn down a good pastry so I was more than happy to whip these up.

With only a few simple ingredients, these pastry spirals came together in no time, and were devoured just as fast.

It’s safe to say that these are a hit with both young and old, and have been requested to be made again the next time they visit.

Begin by rolling a thawed sheet of puff pastry onto a parchment paper lined cookie sheet.

Layer a few slices of ham over the pastry, ensuring that there are no big gaps of pastry showing through.

Sprinkle on your favorite type of cheddar cheese. Any will taste great with this recipe, however I used grated Gouda.

Next roll the pastry up tightly into a log shape. Make sure you lay it seam side down so it does not unravel when you slice into it.

Using a sharp knife cut the pastry into 1/2” thick slices and arrange on the parchment paper. Leave about a 1.5” space between each.

This step is optional, but in my opinion really elevates the end result of this dish. I like to pour a little melted butter and herb mixture over each medallion before baking.

These are looking so good already!

Place in a preheated oven at 375 for about 15 minutes.

When the spirals are golden brown they are ready to take out and enjoy! Let rest at room temperature for about 5 minutes before serving.

It’s a good thing we had company on this day, because I could easily devour this tray on my own.

Enjoy!
