  • 7 white onions, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 4 tbsp plain flour
  • 3/4 cup white wine
  • 6 cups onion broth
  • 1 tsp pepper

In a large pot on medium heat, combine the onions, oil and salt. Use a wooden spoon to stir and allow the onions to soften. Leave for 15 minutes.
Add in sugar and stir for another 10 minutes. Turn heat to low.
Add in the flour and stir until combined.
Add in the wine, broth and pepper. Turn the heat up to high and bring to a boil. Let the soup simmer for 15 minutes.
Turn the heat to low, cover the pot with a lid and let the soup cook for another 30 minutes.
