Pastelitos de Guayaba are very popular in Puerto Rico. You can find them in many bakeries on the Island, these flaky pastries are made with a combination of guava and cheese.

A sweet and tart combination of pastries such as these Pastelitos de guayaba y queso (guava and cheese) is truly magical!

Adding sugar gives a shimmering glaze a glossy shine and a hint of more sweetness to the pastry.

You can also find them in Cuban restaurants or other Latin menus which are also so delicious.

These Pastelitos de guayaba and cheese pastries are crispy, flaky, and utterly decadent. They are delicious when you enjoy them with a great cup of coffee.

This is an easy recipe and doesn't require too many ingredients.

Ingredients

8oz (1 block) cream cheese, softened to room temperature

2 sheets puff pastry, thawed for 15 minutes

1/3 cup powdered sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/4 tsp salt

All-purpose flour to dust counter or parchment paper. (In my case a glass pan)

1 egg, for the egg wash

1 block of Guava paste

Confectioner sugar to garnish (optional)

Instructions

(Preheat oven to 400 degrees)

Prepare egg wash by beating your egg in a small bowl with a tablespoon of water.

Prepare the puff pastry by laying out both sheets of puff pastry, and rolling them out lightly. Using a pizza cutter, cut each sheet into 9 (3x3) equal-sized rectangles or if you want them bigger cut them into 6 equal size.

Prepare the filling cream cheese by adding the sugar and salt. Beat cream cheese in a stand mixer fitted or using an electric hand mixer. Add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract then mix until incorporated and creamy, set aside.

Transfer the 9 or 6 squares to a glass pan with flour or parchment-lined baking sheet. Add with a spoon or pipe a thin layer of the cream cheese mixture onto each square leaving about 1/2 an inch of space from the edge.

Place the guava paste slices on top of the cream cheese mixture cutting as needed to maintain the clear edge.

Brush the edges with the egg wash then top with another square of puff pastry. Press the edges together. Brush the top with the egg wash and sprinkle confectionary sugar on top.

Bake at 400F for about 15 minutes or until golden brown and puffed up.

Enjoy!
