Oh boy, do I love fall!

One of the best things about fall is all the fresh apples at the farmers market.

And one of my favorite fuss-free apples desserts is this fried apples recipe.

It’s so fast and easy. You don’t even have to peel the apples!

Unless you want to, of course. Then, absolutely go ahead and peel the apples.

I like to keep things simple and I just use cinnamon. Other people like to add other fall spices and that is perfectly acceptable.

You can use any kind of apples that you happen to have for this recipe. We like using Honeycrisp apples because they are a little sweet.

Other people prefer granny smith apples, or golden delicious apples, or even red delicious. It works with all of them.

You will just need to fiddle with the amount of sugar depending on the tartness of the apples and the sweetness you like.

Of course, these fried apples are great as a dessert, either plain or with a dollop of vanilla ice cream on top.

But they are also great for breakfast. We like them over oatmeal. Or yogurt. Or pancakes.

And they even make a great side dish for venison or pork.

Don’t you just love dual purpose recipes?

The best part, of course, is that it takes next to no time to whip it up.

Southern Style Cinnamon Fried Apples

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 4 apples of your choice
  • 2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar (more or less)

Instructions

I never peel the apples when I make this recipe. I just wash the peels. But if you don’t like apple peels then go ahead and peel them.

Then core and slice the apples. I like to use this apple slicer/apple corer. It makes things go so much faster and the slices are all the same size so they cook at the same rate.

this makes the process go so fast

Once the apples are ready to go, grab a frying pan or (my favorite) your cast iron skillet. Melt the butter over medium heat until it starts to sizzle.

Add the apple slices and stir. It might look like all the apples aren’t going to fit in the pan, but they will. And they will cook down some as well.

into the frying pan

Fry the apples until they are soft, about 6 to 8 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Now sprinkle the apple with the cinnamon and stir until all the slices are coated.

and spiced

Then sprinkle the sugar over the apples and stir it in until it dissolves into the butter. Take a quick taste here and adjust the sweetness to your liking.

and lightly sugared

Once the sugar, cinnamon, and butter have melded into a delicious sauce, your pan of amazingness is ready to eat.

Spoon the apples into bowls and top with the cinnamon butter mixture. And maybe a scoop of vanilla ice cream. And dig in, my friend. You deserve it!
