Homemade Root Beer is so fun to make and so delicious. The kids will have fun watching the dry ice carbonate the root beer. Just don't let anyone touch the dry ice-use heavy leather gloves if you have to handle it. Making root beer looks like witch's brew, which makes it a great party beverage for Halloween. It is always a favorite at Memorial Day and Fourth of July barbecues. Using this root beer over ice cream for a root beer float is also a yummy idea. Making homemade root beer makes a great childhood memory. Check out this and our other beverage recipes.

Recipe details
Ingredients
- 2 ounces McCormick Root Beer Concentrate or another brand
- 3 1/2 pounds sugar
- 3 1/2 gallons cold water (56 cups)
- 5 pounds dry ice
Instructions
- Bring all of the sugar and 1 gallon of water to boil to dissolve the sugar. Let cool and refrigerate until chilled.
- When ready to make root beer, combine the sugar water, remaining water, and root beer concentrate in a five gallon container. Stir.
- Break up dry ice with a hammer, while still in the brown paper sacks. Add dry ice carefully. Let dry ice bubble for 15-20 minutes (until it dissolves).
- DO NOT put a lid on the container and DO NOT touch the dry ice.
- Enjoy when dry ice has disappeared!!
Tips
- Use a hammer to break up the dry ice while it is still in the brown paper sack.
- Use thick leather gloves when handling dry ice. The grocery store will usually place the dry ice in two brown paper sacks. I just dump the dry ice into the root beer mixture from the bag (after I have broken it into small pieces with a hammer), never having to touch it.
- Buy the dry ice just before you put the mixture into the Igloo cooler.
