Warm, buttery sweet rice. This simple dish can be served for breakfast, as a snack, or even a sweet side accompaniment for meat.

This was one of my favorite things to eat for breakfast as a child. It was a special treat! Hot buttery sweet rice with toast on the side, mmm!! Even to this day I can still remember how the toast tasted after I tore off a piece and dunked it in the leftover juice. Mom always made sure my rice had enough leftover water to achieve that. You know how people love to sop up gravy with biscuits? Well, I loved to sop up that sweet liquid with my bread! The toast just melted on my tongue!

Growing up my Mom was the oldest of 7 kids. They were dirt poor and I envision this dish was the result of having a lot of mouths to feed and not a lot of food! Rice is always good for that!

I will occasionally eat this as a comfort food when I want something hot and fast.

My husband thought it was so strange to eat rice with butter and sugar in it. He still thinks it’s strange after all these years together 😁. The twins eat this and love it! So I think the reason my 4 other kids won’t try it is because their Dad has never tried it and acts like it’s gross. Kids definitely eat what their parents eat! The twins love strange “kid” stuff like sauerkraut, and olives because they see me eat it a lot. I made the mistake of not even offering it to my other kids when they were younger, I just assumed they wouldn’t eat it. Don’t do that! Offer ALL foods as soon as it’s safe to do so! Trust me, it will be much easier for you in the long run!

What are you waiting for my friends? Get that toast ready to go dunking into sweet buttery rice!
