How to Make Simple Basil Pesto Homemade

One of my favorite things to make with basil grown from the garden is pesto homemade. It’s so easy to make too! Wait until you make this simple pesto homemade.

While it’s true you can buy pesto in the store, there’s nothing quite like pesto homemade.

Pesto is one of my favorite sauces to use.

I love it on pasta.

Love it on sandwiches.

It’s so good on baked and roasted potatoes.

I love it with eggs and toast.

Have you ever tried it with grilled mozzarella and tomato?

So yum!

I grow lots of basil in my garden and always have so much that I make this simple pesto homemade all summer long.

How to Make Simple Pesto Homemade

Even though basil is super easy to grow from seed, I typically purchase a flat of basil from the nursery to plant in my garden.

I’ve started it from seed before.

But I tend to buy it from the nursery and plant it around the last frost date.

Do you grow a lot of basil too?

Whether I start it from seed or purchase plants from the nursery, my basil does so well I can never use it quickly enough.

It seems like there’s always more!

Some years, I’ve grown my basil in the vegetable garden.

And some years, I’ve mixed it in with my flower gardens.

But this year, I grew it in my new raised garden beds and it did so well!

One of the easiest ways to use that basil is to make pesto homemade.

Just snip a bunch and make this amazing pesto sauce.

And if you aren’t growing any in the garden this year, you can easily purchase fresh basil from the market.

But the best part?

This homemade pesto will keep in the both the fridge and freezer.

So I made huge batches of it.

Notes About This Pesto Recipe

While many pesto recipes use Parmesan cheese, I make it with either Romano or Parmesan.

Most often I make it with Parmesan, because that’s what I have on hand.

But Romano is really good in pesto because it has a stronger, more robust flavor.

So use whatever you have on hand.

And if you don’t have pine nuts?

No problem, you can easily substitute it with walnuts.

As an aside, whenever I make pesto homemade, I eyeball the ingredients.

So every batch I make tastes a little different every time.

Thus, the ingredients listed below are estimates.

Feel free to add more or less depending on your liking.
