These orange crescent rolls can be assembled in minutes and once your family takes one bite of these…they will be begging for you to make them all of the time. The tangy flavor of the orange & cream cheese filling is a match made in heaven with the buttery, flakiness of the store bought crescent rolls. Oh, and the orange glaze drizzled across the tops of the orange crescent rolls…you could eat that with a spoon all on it’s own (I may or may not have done this!).

I’d love to make all of our meals from scratch in our home, however being a busy working mom, I don’t always have the time. So I say, take the help wherever you can get it!

How do you zest an orange?

Fresh orange zest is essential in this orange crescent rolls recipe. It gives the rolls a fresh orange flavor that cannot be achieved from orange flavorings or extract.

Holding an uncut, unpeeled orange in one hand and a microplane in the other, run the orange skin down the microplane. Grate gently, only removing the colored part of the orange skin (stop when you see white). The white pith of the orange is bitter, so you avoid adding that to your orange cream cheese mixture.

The perfect recipe for a Mother's Day breakfast or brunch.
Assembling the Orange Crescent Rolls

In a small mixing bowl, combine cream cheese, sugar, and orange zest with a hand mixer until smooth.

Unroll crescent dough and separate into triangles. With a spoon, spread an even amount of the cream cheese mixture between the 16 triangles. Roll each triangle; starting at the widest point, and place each crescent onto a baking sheet.

Bake crescents in a 375 degree oven for about 10 minutes or until golden brown.

While rolls bake in the oven, combine the glaze ingredients in a small bowl and whisk until smooth, adding orange juice a bit at a time, as needed.

Remove orange crescent rolls from oven and immediately drizzle with glaze. Serve warm, and enjoy!

Orange Crescent Rolls Variations & Substitutions

  • This recipe can be made with the lower fat crescent roll dough. I used Pillsbury butter flake crescent roll dough.
  • Either full fat cream cheese or 1/3 less fat cream cheese can be used to make these orange crescent rolls.
  • No vanilla extract? Almond extract is often used in this recipe. I did not have that on hand, so I used vanilla extract instead.
  • Make smaller versions of these orange crescent rolls by cutting each crescent roll triangle in half with a pizza cutter.
  • Don’t love the flavor of orange? These rolls can be made with lemon, lime, or grapefruit zest. You could make these rolls for fall by omitting the citrus zest & juice and using pumpkin or apple pie spice for tasty fall treats. Your imagination is the limit with these rolls!
Orange rolls are the ideal recipe for breakfast or brunch at home.
Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

I don’t recommend baking these rolls ahead of time. They will flatten over time (does not affect the taste, just the appearance). They are best baked & served the day of our breakfast or brunch.

You can however, make the cream cheese filling a day or so in advance, chill in the fridge until ready to use, then spread onto the crescent roll dough.

How long will the crescent rolls last?

If you have any leftovers (these will go quick I promise) store rolls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 1-2 days. The orange crescent rolls will begin to flatten & the glaze will start to become watery the longer they sit.

Reheat rolls in the oven or air fryer until heated through before serving.

Orange crescent rolls are an easy & delicious breakfast treat.
Can I freeze these orange crescent rolls?

You sure can! I highly recommend making a double batch of these rolls and serving one now, and saving one for later.

Bake the rolls from frozen, if you allow the rolls to thaw first, they will be mushy. Bake them fully frozen and uncovered in a 375 degree oven. Once they are puffy & golden brown, remove from oven and immediately drizzle with glaze.
