Skip the takeaway onion rings - you can make your own crunchy onion rings at home in the air fryer!

These onion rings are easy to make and don't take long either. The best part is by using your air fryer, they are healthier alternatives to takeaway onion rings. No frying in oil needed!

Onion rings are a favourite for me when I get takeaway food. Knowing I can create a lighter version at home whenever the craving hits is a great thing. Plus the whole family loves them too. They are a simple side dish to make at home with minimal ingredients needed and no deep fryer!

Crispy light air fryer onion rings - skip the deep fryer!

Slice your onion into rings and separate each ring

The right amount of crunch - no icky greasy fingers either! These onion rings will become your new favourite copycat recipe to make at home.

We love making these onion rings together as an easy family recipe the kids can help with. They love to roll the onion rings in the coating and the fact that they know it won't be long before their onion rings are cooked and ready to enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 large onion
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • ½ cup plain all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
Instructions

Cut onion into slices around 1cm thick. Separate into rings.
In a wide bowl, combine flour, salt and paprika. Pour half of the mixture into a second bowl and stir in buttermilk until combined. In a third bowl, mix salt and panko breadcrumbs.
Coat onion rings in flour mixture, followed by the buttermilk mixture then coating in the breadcrumb mixture. Repeat with all onion rings.
Place onion rings in a single layer in the air fryer basket, avoiding them overlapping as much as possible. Cook for around 10-12 minutes in air fryer on around 200 degrees Celcius (400F), until golden.
Tips
  • If you have a smaller air fryer, cook your onion rings in batches to ensure they all end up crispy and well cooked.
  • Serve with your favourite dipping sauces, as a side dish or an appetiser.
