When Did Nutella Come About?

After World War II, Nutella® was a smart solution to a tricky problem: the shortage of cocoa supplies.

A pastry maker Pietro Ferrero, from Piedmont in Italy, imaginatively created a sweet paste from hazelnuts, sugar, and just a few rare cocoas. He made it into the shape of a loaf that could be cut and put on bread, and he named it ‘Giandujot’ after a local fair character famous at the time. On May 14th, 1946, Pietro Ferrero originally founded the company.

Pietro Ferrero founded the delicious ‘Giandujot’ paste into a new product that you could quickly put on bread. The new combination was named SuperCrema (the precursor to Nutella® hazelnut spread).

Michele, Pietro Ferrero’s son, applied his unprecedented idea, and, by experience, he made the recipe better and invented the first-ever jar of a new hazelnut and cocoa cream. The new creation, however, was still didn’t have a name. So he put his thinking cap on again and invented the term we’ve all come to love: Nutella®.

These fantastic swirled Nutella pumpkin brownies are to die for.
