You guys…it is BARELY Fall-ISH weather and I am already craving ALL of the warm gooey winter treats. SOOOOO it is time for me to officially enter the hoodie and leggings portion of the year I guess. During camping season I was REALLY itching to make a Dutch oven peach cobbler (or dump cake), but never got around to it. THEN I decided to try some APPLE recipes since it is THAT time of year. THEN I had a caramel apple the other day and BOOM…my brain was like…I bet a caramel apple CAKE would be AMAZING!! AND guess what…IT IS!! Say hello to Caramel Apple Dump Cake.

OK…so let me start off by saying…my kids hate the name dump cake. SOOOO we like to call ours Caramel Apple Cobbler. BUT because I am a HUGE nerd, I actually googled dump cake and it says…it is the combination of a cobbler and a cake created by DUMPING all of the ingredients into a pan. WHICH is essentially what this is. SO you can call it a cobbler or a cake or burrito for all I care. No matter what you call it, this caramel apple dump cake is delicious!

A few helpful hints:

  • You could use different cake mixes to add a different flavor. I plan to try a spice cake next…it might cut the sweetness a little bit.
  • Try to cover as much of your dry cake topping with butter as possible.
  • Spread out the caramels for best result. Too much in one location causes a hard spot. Still yummy, but hard on the dental work.
  • No need to over cook. It will NEVER be all the way “set up”. When everything is golden and bubbly, it is done. Like a cobbler, this is eaten in PILES on a plate. NOT like a cake. The toothpick test will NEVER come out clean. The more ooey and gooey the better if you ask me!!
  • Eat warm. TRUST ME. Add some vanilla ice-cream and let it get a little melty…mmmmm!!! This is a SUPER sweet dessert. The ice-cream helps to cut that sweetness a little bit. AND everything is just better alamode.

Ingredients

  • 2 20 oz cans apple pie filling
  • 1 11 oz package caramels OR if you can find them, caramel bits will work perfectly too.
  • 1 yellow cake mix You can try other flavored cake mixes to mix it up too. Spice might be yummy and less sweet.
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 tsp cinnamon Can substitute apple pie spice for cinnamon and nutmeg.
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9×13 cake pan with cooking spray.
Dump both cans of apples into greased pan. Sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg over apples. I tend to add a bit more seasoning based on taste. I like ALLLL the cinnamon.
Drop caramels on top of apple cinnamon mixture. Make sure they are spready out evenly…and not DIRECTLY next to the side of the pan.
Sprinkle the dry cake mix over the caramels evenly.
Cut butter into pats and place on top of the dry cake mix. Try to cover most of the surface area of the cake.
Bake at 350 for around 45 minutes. When everything is brown and bubbly, it is done. Remove from oven and let cool before eating. Those warm caramels will be like molten lave…be careful.
Eat warm and topped with vanilla ice-cream…TRUST ME!!!
