Are you a crumble or crisp person? Do you love this time of year when after a delicious meal the dessert is a surprisingly healthy berry crumble? One of my favorite desserts is a warm ramekin filled with mixed berries and a delicious crumble topping of a little brown sugar, cinnamon, and something a bit crunchy. This particular recipe can be made in individual servings or in a bigger family-style serving piece.

Crumbles and crisps are terms that are used interchangeably. A crumble involves a mixture of flour and butter that is rubbed to the texture of breadcrumbs and cooked as a topping for fruit. A crisp is sometimes defined as a dessert of fruit baked with a crunchy topping of brown sugar, butter, and flour. My recipe involves a little flour, butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. An easy way to make this into a red, white, and blue dessert involves pairing vanilla ice cream with blueberries and raspberries in this delicious treat! It’s perfect for Memorial Day, the 4th of July, or Labor Day.

Here is a photo of the finished yummiest and healthy berry crumble. Sometimes I make it in white ramekins and at other times I make it in red ones as above.

In this post...

Ingredients for the Healthy Berry Crumble:

1 cup fresh strawberries, quartered

2 cups fresh blueberries

2 cups fresh raspberries

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

6 Tbsp regular butter, melted

2/3 cup unpacked light brown sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

The reason I am showing you a bag of frozen berries is that although for years I have made this delicious dessert with fresh berries, recently I substituted these frozen berries, unthawed and they were terrific. The oven thawed and cooked the berries perfectly, so you decide if you want to use fresh or frozen berries. I actually used them because I wanted to make the dessert early on the day of the event. I hadn’t gone to the store yet, and I decided to give it a go. Win, either way!

Step 1 for the Healthy Berry Crumble:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Put the berries together in a bowl. (If you want to make a healthy blueberry crumble instead of a mixed berry crumble, just use blueberries.)

Put the brown sugar and cinnamon in a bowl.

-Put the flour in a bowl.

Step 2 for the Healthy Berry Crumble

In another medium bowl combine flour, sugar, and cinnamon. Remove 3 Tbsp of the flour mixture and gently toss this with the berries. Place the berries in an 8-inch square pan or in 8 ramekins.

Step 3 for the Healthy Berry Crumble:

To make the topping, add the melted butter to the remaining flour mixture; combine well. Crumble little bits of this topping all over the top of the berries. Bake until berries start to bubble, about 35-40 minutes. Cut into 8 pieces. *Sometimes as in these photos I make this dessert in 8 little ramekins. I bake them until they bubble which is about 30 minutes if they started at room temperature. Also, be careful as they’ll be hot so place the ramekins on a dessert plate and serve them to your guests with a scoop of softened vanilla ice cream. It’s a real crowd-pleaser. Here’s the final image of the yummy and healthy berry crumble! It just needs a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!

I hope you make this delicious dessert sometime soon. It’s so quick and easy to prepare! I have it ready on the counter before dinner with the oven pre-heated. Then right as we sit down to dinner, I pop the tray into the oven. Then at 30 minutes or so, I remove it and let it cool for a bit while enjoying the dinner conversation. Then once the dinner dishes are cleared, I serve a wonderful treat!

XO,

Dr. Julie
