Paneer Tikka is made from chunks of paneer marinated with hung curd, some indian spices and grilled in a tandoor. It's definitely a vegetarian alternative to other meat dishes. It's quite popular veg appetizer dish in India.

However, I love to make it on tawa because it gives nice smoky flavour.........we know it can't match the flavours of Paneer Tikka cooked in a tandoor or clay oven but this is for those who want to fulfil their crave for tikka’s with the availablity in the kitchen.

Every kitchen doesn't have all the instrument. So, this recipe is for them who can easily make Paneer Tikka on Tawa.


This dish is quite popular appetizers among vegetarian people. Unlike Paneer Tikka, there are wide varieties made with vegetables too, let it be cauliflower Tikka, Babycorn Tikka & mushroom Tikka.

Ingredients
For Marination
  • Paneer cubes 10 pieces
  • Onions 1 inch cubes 8 pieces
  • Bell Pepper 1 inch cubes 8 pieces
  • Tomato 1 inch cubes 5 pieces
  • Hung curd ½ cup
  • Dry roasted Gram flour 2 tsp
  • Mustard oil ½ tsp
  • Lemon juice 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder ¼ tsp
  • Cumin powder ¼ tsp
  • Kashmiri red chilli powder 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder ½ tsp
  • Garam masala ½ tsp
  • Ginger garlic paste 1 tsp
  • Kasturi Methi crushed ½ tsp
  • Chaat masala ½ tsp
  • Salt 1/4 tsp or as per taste

For Cooking on Tawa
  • Refined Oil 1 to 2 tsp
  • Hot Charcoal 1 piece
  • Ghee 1/2 tsp
For Garnish
  • Mint Coriander Chutney
  • Lemon Wedges
  • Onions sliced
  • Sprinkle Chaat Masala a pinch
Instructions
For Marination
In a large bowl, whisk hung curd untill smooth & silky.
Then add all the ingredients to the marinade, ginger garlic paste, mustard oil, coriander powder, chaat masala, kashmiri red chili powder, garam masala, kasuri methi and salt.
Whisk it well to combine everything together & then add lemon juice.
Add Paneer cubes, onions, tomato & bell peppers. Mix it all together until everything is properly coated with the marinade.
Cover the bowl & refrigerate it for 1 hrs.
After 1 hr, take the marinated paneer and veggies out of the refrigerator.
Now heat a tawa, brush little oil & cook these marinated paneer n veggies all sides until slightly burnt n crispy.
For Cooking on Tawa
Now heat a tawa, brush little oil & cook these marinated paneer n veggies all sides until slightly golden brown or slightly charred.
Once cooked take a small bowl place it at the centre of the tawa.
Add a piece of hot charcoal to the bowl & add little oil or ghee on the charcoal.
When smoke start to come, immediately cover the tawa with a lid.
Allow paneer & veggies to absorb the smoke for 1 - 2 mins. This method adds nice intense smoky flavours.
Serve it hot with some coriander mint chutney, lemon wedges & onion slices.
Tips
  • Don't overcook paneer on Tawa or it will be chewy.
  • Marinate for minimum 1 hr or overnight also works.
