This cake is similar to that of an upside-down cake, but not exactly the same. Upside-down cake is more of a flipped cake whereas a dump cake is basically dumping all your ingredients into the pot and cooking.
Here are a great set of tips that I love to follow when making any kind of instant pot dump cake recipe:
- I like to tilt the plate around every few minutes to allow the cake to absorb the juices and make sure to get all the sugary sweetness infused into the cake.
- For this recipe, I like to use my 6-quart Instant Pot Duo.
- To add extra spice or flavor to a dump cake, I like to add 1/2 tsp of cinnamon and 1/4 of nutmeg.
- For anyone who prefers to not have cherries in this recipe, that’s okay! This recipe can be made without them.
- If you find that you don’t have slices of pineapple, chunks will work just as well.
- I like to buy two boxes of cake mix so I can make two batches with each can of cherry pie filling and crushed pineapple I have. You’ll only need a half can of each for one dump cake! You can also bake them both at the same time with this Stackable Stainless Steel Steamer Insert Pans with Sling!
This recipe is made in an instant pot! Instant pots are very useful for many recipes and are my favorite appliance to cook with because it gets done faster with the same results as baking in the oven.
Yes! Just like the instant pot, there are dump cakes that can be made in a pressure cooker as well as other desserts.
Although Instant Pots will cook your dump cake a lot faster, you can cook the recipe in a Crock-Pot. You will need to adjust the times, but the steps are the same on how to prepare the recipe.
If you don’t have butter cake mix, you can whip it up at home with a few simple steps. You can use my Classic White Cake Mix to start. Once you have prepared your white cake mix, you can follow the instructions below to make butter cake mix.

You will need to place the dump cake into an airtight container for the best method of storage.
Whenever you make a cake that has fruit in it, you want to store it in the refrigerator. The fruit in the cake will spoil and this will cause the cake to go bad. When stored in the fridge, your dump cake can last for 5-7 days.
