Walnut Sourdough French Toast Bake

This walnut sourdough french toast recipe is so delicious, and probably better for you than most french toast recipes, with no sugar added! This recipe just gets healthier and healthier depending on how you decide to make it.

First, using fresh bread instead of processed bagged bread, you will be getting higher nutritional content from whole and better quality ingredients (your basic breads should have nothing other than flour, water, salt, and yeast).

Another way to improve the quality of this dish is by buying REAL maple syrup. I live in New England, so I am fortunate enough to be close to tons of local sugar shacks where I can get top quality maple syrups that only have their natural sugars. Added sugar in maple syrup is a hard no in my book, as it is already so naturally sweet!

This walnut sourdough french toast bake is best served immediately. You store leftovers sealed with cling wrap in the loaf pan or transferred to an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days.

  • 1/2 Loaf Walnut Sourdough Bread (pulled apart into cubes (also you can use any kind of bread))
  • 1/2 cup Heavy Cream
  • 2 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1 tbsp Cinnamon
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 tbsp Butter
Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Grease a 9×5 loaf pan with butter.
Add in the chunks of bread.
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the egg, heavy cream, cinnamon, and vanilla extract.
Pour the mixture over your bread chunks.
Toss the bread in the mixture to make sure it is evenly coated.
Cover with aluminum foil, and let sit for ten minutes.
Bake for 20 minutes with the aluminum foil on, and then for an additional 10-15 minutes uncovered.
Serve warm drizzled with maple syrup.
Tips
  • If you don't have heavy cream, you can use milk. It just won't be as rich.
  • You can use any kind of bread you want! It does not necessarily have to be walnut sourdough bread.
