This quick, easy, and delicious smoothie is a great way to get a serving of fruits and veggies in to start your day!

Smoothies are my go-to solution for a quick and healthy breakfast. These easy mixed fruit smoothies with spinach are a staple in our house. They’re delicious, packed with lots of fruits and veggies (thanks spinach!), and you can make these while you’re still half asleep (I’m the first to admit I’m not a morning person…).

Bonus for parents: this recipe is a kid friendly smoothie with spinach (just ask my toddler!). If your kiddo may not be keen on eating their greens, these smoothies may be a good way for you to get your child a serving of vegetables.

TELL ME ABOUT THIS MIXED FRUIT SMOOTHIE WITH SPINACH

Level of difficulty: Easy. Measure, blend, and go!

Flavor: Fruity! Tropical fruit and citrus fruit are the flavors that shine through.

Time: It will take you less than 5 minutes to put together this easy smoothie recipe.

WHAT ARE THE BEST GREENS FOR SMOOTHIES?

Spinach is my go-to for green smoothie recipes because it has a mild taste, meaning it doesn’t overpower the flavor of the rest of the ingredients. Adding spinach into your smoothies is a great way to get a serving of vegetables and add a nutritional boost to your smoothie recipe.

Kale, Swiss chard, and collard greens are other popular leafy greens that can be used in smoothies. Please note that all of these options have a much stronger flavor than spinach and can be somewhat bitter. These options are often best paired with sweet fruits and other flavor enhancers to help balance out and mask their flavor.

INGREDIENTS

Frozen Mixed Fruit: I use a blend that has pineapple, mango, strawberries, and peaches.

A Medium Banana: You can use a fresh banana or one you’ve thrown into the freezer because it was starting to brown on your counter...both are great options!

Fresh Spinach: a highly nutritious add to your smoothie.

Ground Flax: A great source of omega-3s, fiber, and a variety of other nutrients, ground flaxseed is a great addition to any smoothie recipe.

Plain Greek Yogurt: Adding plain yogurt to your smoothie helps give your breakfast smoothie a nice texture, adds protein, and adds live and active cultures which are good for digestion.

Orange Juice: A popular and accessible juice selection, orange juice is high in vitamin C, folate, and potassium. You can also select varieties that are fortified with calcium and vitamin D.

OPTIONAL SMOOTHIE INGREDIENTS FOR ADDITIONAL PROTEIN

If you would like to add more protein to your mixed fruit smoothies with spinach, adding a serving of either plain or vanilla whey protein, plant-based protein, or collagen is a great option. Note: adding protein powder or collagen powder will thicken your smoothies, so you may want to add some additional liquid to your recipe (this is a personal preference).

OVERVIEW: HOW TO MAKE A MIXED FRUIT SMOOTHIE WITH SPINACH

  1. Place your ingredients in your blender: In the basin of a standard-size blender, pour in half of the orange juice, then add the banana, spinach, flax, yogurt, and frozen fruit. Top with the remaining orange juice.
  2. Note: you want to add your spinach early on in this process so the other ingredients can squish it down (there is A LOT of spinach in here, which is good!)
  3. Blend: Tightly secure the lid of the blender and blend until smooth.
  4. Serve and enjoy! Divide between two glasses and enjoy!

MODIFICATIONS FOR DIETARY RESTRICTIONS: VEGAN, DF

This frozen fruit smoothie recipe can easily be modified to fit a lot of dietary needs! As written, this recipe is vegetarian and gluten-free. A few notes to make sure this easy green smoothie recipe fits your diet:

  • Make this into a vegan or dairy free smoothie recipe by selecting a non-dairy yogurt.
  • For those adding the optional protein powder to this smoothie, make sure to pick a protein powder that fits your dietary needs.
  • Those who follow a vegetarian diet can use whey protein powder or a plant-based protein powder. Those on a gluten free diet can use either of these proteins as well, but should confirm the protein selected notes it’s gf on the label

Those following a dairy free or vegan diet should select a plant-based protein powder that meets this dietary requirement (it should verify this on the label).

FAQS

Should I use frozen fruit or fresh fruit? Either is fine for smoothies, but I like to use frozen fruit because it is so convenient. Especially in a recipe like this that has several varieties of fruit in it, buying a bag of frozen mixed fruit is just so easy. No need to buy a large amount of fresh fruit or cut anything. However, if you and/or your family eats a lot of fresh fruit, that may be a better option for you.

Can I use a different liquid than orange juice in this smoothie recipe? Yes! I often swap out the OJ for coconut water or pineapple coconut water in this recipe and it’s great (I love coconut water smoothies). Coconut water is low in sugar and full of electrolytes, vitamins, and nutrients making it a great option for smoothies.

Can I make this smoothie ahead of time (ie- the night before)? Yes you can. If you choose to make this smoothie the night before, I would recommend giving it another quick blend in the morning or placing it in a shaker cup. Note: your smoothie will be a little thicker and the color will be more green if you let it sit overnight. Not a big deal, I just don’t want you to be surprised! Making this the night ahead is a great option if you have a busy morning or need to take your smoothie to go.

What if I don’t have a standard sized blender? If you have a smaller-sized blender, like a Ninja single-serve or Nutribullet, halve (or quarter) the recipe to fit your needs.
