Looking for a last minute gift that’s quick and easy? Give the gift of mulled wine mix in a jar. Comforting whether with wine or juice.

Without a doubt, every year there’s one person (or a few) that inadvertently gets left out on the gift list. Never fear, I have a great last minute gift idea that’s homemade and really simple to make. This mix is not only delicious mulled with wine, but equally delicious mulled with juice as well.

All you need is a jar and the ingredients. Most of which can be found in your pantry, this is a blend of sweet, pepper-y and savory.

I seem to have a hard time throwing out a pretty jar. Anyone with me? Though we are very good about recycling around here at the 1820, just the same our panty is loaded with random jars of various sizes. All the better for holding a few mulling spice ingredients.

When the weather gets a little chilly, that’s when mulled wine is most welcomed. Something about the blend of flavors; the cinnamon with the star anise; the allspice with cloves and dried oranges, all blended with a nice red wine, then heated on the stove for a long simmer, because after all, low and slow is always the recipe for true comfort.

Though I am a huge fan of red wine, I’ve honestly found that my favorite way to enjoy this mulled wine mix is actually with juice. Cranberry juice, to be exact. All you need to do is warm some pure cranberry juice with the mulling ingredients, and then simmer for at least 45 minutes, just as would be done with the wine.

Perfect to sip during the holidays, and, better yet, just the right ticket to sip when you’re chilled to the bone, or even when the throat is a tad sore and needs some comfort. This mix is the unified answer.

All of these ingredients can be found at the grocery store, and are essential in keeping within your pantry. Here is how to make mulled wine mix in a jar.

  • 1 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 750 ml red wine such as pinot noir
  • 1 cup brandy

TO MAKE MULLED WINE:
Add the mulling spices, wine, brandy and orange juice to a 3 quart sauce pan. Simmer over a low flame for at least 45 minutes, being careful not to bring to a boil.
If not using wine or brandy, this is when you need to add the cranberry juice. Simmer as above, for at least 45 minutes.
Place a fine mesh strainer over a 4 cup measuring glass. Strain mulled wine / juice through strainer and then pour into mugs.
Serve hot.
Can be stored in the refrigerator and then warmed slowly on the stove.
