Create mint julep mocktails to celebrate the Kentucky Derby !

The mint julep is the signature drink of the Kentucky Derby. Growing up in the state of Kentucky, we celebrated with these annually on the first Saturday in May. Here are a few Kentucky Derby facts for those of you who are interests.

Kentucky Derby Facts

Here are six of my favorite Kentucky Derby facts.

  • Nineteen past winners have had names beginning with the letter “S.” My personal favorite being Secretariat.
  • There are balls and parties all over the state of Kentucky the week leading into the derby bringing famous people and leaders from all over the world
  • Only three horses ran in the 1892 and 1905 Kentucky Derby races.
  • Women wear extravagant hats to match their fancy outfits to the race.
  • The Kentucky Derby makes up one third of the coveted Triple Crown along with the Belmont Stakes and the Preakness Stakes.
  • Over 120,000 mint juleps are said to be consumed at the race every year.

Mint Julep Mocktail

This recipe makes 6 mint julep mocktails that are great for kids! They are a little bitter with the Ginger Beer but substituting Ginger Ale is an option. It is one of my favorite Kentucky Derby Kid Activities.

Ingredients

  • Mint leaves
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 2 Cups Water
  • Fresh Juice from 3 or 4 Large Lemons
  • 4 Cups Sprite or 7 Up
  • 2 Cups Ginger Beer

One of the most fun steps for kids is juicing the lemons. This is such a great little tool for this and works with other citrus too.

Mocktail Mint Julep Directions

The directions for making Mint Julep Mocktails is super easy. Kids love helping in the kitchen so be sure to include them in the making.

  1. Dissolve sugar in heated water and add lemon juice.
  2. Let it cool then add other liquids.
  3. Serve over ice with mint leaves as a garnish.
  4. Sugar the rim of the glasses for extra sweetness and a festive touch.

I loved these so much while growing up and having these as a special treat on Derby Day!
