Za’atar pie, a popular middle eastern savoury pastry. These are usually served as an appetizer; however, they can be the perfect snack, breakfast, or lunch, especially served with a cup of tea! Any type of middle eastern recipe such as this one brings me to a happy place because it reminds me of my childhood and where I come from. I love belonging to a culture that has invented some of the most flavorful spices, recipes and dishes. The za’atar spice blend on its own is so full of delicious taste, it has dried thyme, oregano, coriander, sumac, sesame seeds, and salt…now imagine that spread on some warm naan bread with olive oil, makes my mouth water! This recipe is so easy and takes ten minutes to make, which is why it’s so perfect in the sense that you can make it any time and I'm sure you will impress a lot of people by making this, as it serves as a great crowd pleaser as well!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup of za'atar spice blend
  • 4 tbsp sumac
  • 1/4 olive oil
  • 1/2 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 15 slices of naan bread (the small ones)
Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350 and then begin to make the za'atar paste by adding the za'atar spice blend to a bowl along with the sumac and olive oil. Stir until combined and/or have reached a runny paste consistency.
Shred the cheese & then begin to spread the naan bread out on a baking sheet. Add a small amount of za'atar paste to each slice of naan bread and spread in a circular motion the way you would sauce on pizza dough.
Add shredded cheese to each or some of the pies if desired
Stick into oven for 5 minutes or until you have seen the cheese has melted. Enjoy!
Tips
  • Don't overthink this, it's so simple. Treat it like you're making small pizzas but middle eastern version!
