Hi, I'm Cindy. I write a DIY and home decor blog at DIY Beautify and I also love to share our family's absolute favorite recipes. If it's on the blog you know it's a keeper and family-approved!

My mom, who was a legendary cook and baker, introduced me to this recipe as a young girl. We made it several times together and it's a recipe my own family has loved for years! Warm and gooey apple crisp, served with vanilla ice cream is about as good as it gets! A perfect dessert for anytime, but especially once it starts getting chilly!

Baking this apple crisp in a (aff link) cast iron skillet isn't necessary, but it helps to make it even better! The top gets extra crunchy while the inside stays gooey and moist!

Peel and slice apples into a medium bowl. Add zest and lemon juice and mix frequently to keep apples from browning. Sprinkle with a little cinnamon if you're a cinnamon junkie like me!

Arrange apple slices in a cast iron skillet or a porcelain baking dish. When choosing a vessel to bake this dessert, think shallow and wide!

Mix dry ingredients together. Add cubed cold butter and work with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Press mixture over apples and dot with the extra 1 Tablespoon butter.

Bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes until top is slightly browned and mixture is bubbly around the edges.

Let cool for 10-15 minutes, then serve warm with vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream!

Enjoy!

Tips
  • When choosing apples, think about how you like your apples cooked. I like mine to break down into mush, so I use a soft apple like a McIntosh. If you like your apple to still have a bite to it, choose something firmer like a Granny Smith.
