Liege Belgian Waffles

10 waffles
1 hr 3 min

So you can't travel to Europe right now to get legit Belgian waffles but guess what?! You don't have to travel overseas! I will bring the waffles straight to your kitchen with this AMAZING recipe that knocks the socks off any homemade or frozen waffle you are accustomed to eating.

There is a restaurant and food truck in Utah and Idaho that is very popular called Waffle Love. I believe they even won the Amazing Food Truck Race on The Food Network years back. This waffle recipe tastes exactly the same as their $8 waffle and you won't have to wait in an extremely long time to get it.

You can make these for breakfast, brunch, dinner, or dessert. I made these for dinner the other night and my husband, who strongly dislikes breakfast for dinner kinda guy, gobbled these up and even ate the leftovers for breakfast the next day!

Get your spread ready with strawberries, nutella, whipcream, peanut butter, chocolate, bananas, Biscoff spread, raspberries, you name it! A waffle party is long over due!

One thing you need from a specialty store or even order on Amazon is a bag of this Lars Own Belgian Pearl Sugar. It is a must!

Those huge chunks of sugar caramelize in waffle maker and become oh so good!

Get out your Belgian Waffle maker! I got this for a wedding present almost 20 years ago and it is still running like a champ!

This is not your average, thin, soupy waffle batter. you will need a 1/2 C to make ball size dough to heat.

Golden brown to perfection!

Pile on your toppings

It is party time! When you invite your family and friends over, be sure to tell them in "Donkey's" voice from Shrek, "I'm making waffles!" (for you Shrek fans)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup luke warm milk
  • 1 ½ teaspoons granulated table sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 cup butter, very soft or partially melted (2 sticks)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups flour
  • 8 ounces Belgian Pearl sugar (approx. 1 ½ cups)
  • Fresh fruit, sliced strawberries, Whipped Cream or Whipped Crème Fraiche

Instructions

Dissolve yeast in milk and granulated sugar.
Whisk in eggs, vanilla and butter.
Whisk in salt and 1-2 cups flour until smooth and elastic.
Gradually whisk /stir in remaining flour to make a soft dough.
Cover bowl, set in a warm place and allow to raise until double in size (approximately 30-60 minutes).
Stir in Pearl Sugar and allow to rest 15 minutes while waffle iron is heating.
Preheat waffle iron according to manufacturer’s directions.
Divide dough into 10 softball size patties. (NOTE: Dough is sticky, dough is too soft to shape into patties, drop by scoop onto hot waffle iron; I like this method.)
Cook each patty in prepared waffle iron until golden and crisp (about 2-4 minutes) or desired doneness.
Serve with fresh fruit, chocolate and whipped cream.
