Hot cocoa bombs and hot chocolate bombs have become a fun way to enjoy a warm treat in a mug and they are so easy to make! These white chocolate hot cocoa bombs are perfect for a special treat at home or as part of a hot chocolate bar at a party.

One of the best things about hot cocoa bombs is that you can make them ahead of time, ready to enjoy at a later day. Filled with hot chocolate and marshmallows, you simply add them to your hot milk and watch them dissolve into a delicious drink.

Plus kids love watching the chocolate melt away in the mug!

Helpful Tip – You can easily switch out the white chocolate for milk or dark chocolate, or try with flavoured chocolate such as Caramilk or Strawberry chocolate melts.

This hot cocoa bomb recipe makes 3 bombs. You can easily double or triple the ingredients to make more.

You will need a silicone mould to make the bombs. Ensure you choose one that is small enough to fit inside of an average mug but also large enough to fill with your hot chocolate mix and mini marshmallows.

The best thing about making these hot chocolate bombs is that you can fill them with what you like. Of course, hot chocolate and mini marshmallows are the perfect fillings for your cocoa balls, but you don’t have to stop there!

Add extra flavours and fillings if you want to experiment, such as peppermints or crushed candy cane pieces, crushed candies, sprinkles, or flavoured powders such as Milo or Nesquik instead of hot chocolate or cocoa powder.

For decorating your white chocolate hot cocoa bombs, drizzle with milk or dark chocolate instead of white chocolate. Or sprinkle on different types of sprinkles and candies.

Ingredients

  • 120g white chocolate melts
  • 6 teaspoons of mini marshmallows
  • 6 teaspoons of hot chocolate mix
  • Decorations of your choosing such as sprinkles
Equipment
  • Food safe paint brush or spoon
  • Silicone mold
Instructions

Add 120g of white chocolate melts into a micro safe bowl. Heat for 30 seconds and stir. Continue heating in 20-second intervals and stirring in between until chocolate is fully melted.
Using a baking paintbrush or the back of a small spoon, coat the silicone moulds completely in a layer of the chocolate.
Place the coated moulds flat in the freezer for approximately 3 minutes, or until set.
Coat the moulds with another layer of melted chocolate to make the sides thicker since a lot of the chocolate would have settled at the bottom. Chill in the freezer for a further 3 minutes until set.
Very gently pull back the moulds from the chocolate and carefully push the chocolate out. Avoid touching the chocolate with your fingers so that it does not melt.
Place a small microwave-safe plate in the microwave for 45 seconds.
Remove the plate and place one of the half bombs on the warm plate for a couple of seconds so it can melt the edge.
Quickly fill that mould with 2 teaspoons of hot chocolate mix followed by 2 teaspoons of mini mallows.
Take another half bomb and repeat step 9 by melting the edge on the warm plate.
Place the second chocolate half on top of the first and hold together for a few seconds for the melted edges to bond.
Repeat this process for the other 2 bombs (or any extras you plan to make.
Use leftover melted chocolate to drizzle over your bombs with a spoon or piping bag. Add any extra decorations such as sprinkles quickly before the drizzle hardens.
When ready to drink, warm your milk in the microwave or stovetop, add to mug then pop a bomb into the mug, allowing it to melt. Stir before drinking. Alternatively, add the chocolate cocoa bomb first and pour the hot milk over the top.
Tips
  • Tips & Variations: Try with milk or dark chocolate for something different.
  • Keep the chocolate from hardening by placing your small bowl inside a larger bowl with hot water at the bottom.

Could you tell the specific size moulds you used and where to buy them?

I bought mine at Amazon. Some are smaller than others. Most of them don't give you a size on the cavity of the mold. Some do like 2.55. You kind of have to eye ball it and get an idea. I bought a small and a big. The bigger ones were easier to work with. The one on amazon I am looking at says the diameter of each cavity is 2.64
