Mozzarella sticks: the queen of all appetizers... but make it homemade. I have been wanting to make these for awhile now but just never did. Well I went grocery shopping a couple days ago and according to my boyfriend, I bought the wrong brand of string cheese😂 So now was the perfect time to try making some homemade mozzarella sticks! These were so dang good, I was impressed. Restaurant quality. I deep fried them on the stove in vegetable oil, but you could also throw them in the air fryer. It might actually be more convenient that way! And a tiny bit healthier😉

Start by cutting up your cheese sticks and putting your eggs, flour, and bread crumbs in three separate bowls.

After they’re breaded, freeze them for at least an hour.

Deep fry them in oil.

Serve with marinara sauce!

Ingredients

  • 1 pack of mozzarella string cheese (comes with 12)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 1/2 cups panko bread crumbs
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1/3 bottle of vegetable oil
  • Marinara sauce for serving
Instructions

Unwrap your string cheese and cut each of them in half horizontally.
In one bowl, beat your eggs. In a separate bowl, place your flour. In a third bowl, combine bread crumbs, paprika, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and salt & pepper.
Toss each string cheese in the egg, then flour, back to the egg, and then to the bread crumbs until evenly coated. You may need to kind of press the bread crumbs into the cheese stick. Once they’re all breaded, freeze for at least an hour.
When you’re ready to fry them, pour vegetable oil into a sauce pan or a cast iron skillet at medium heat until hot and put the mozzarella sticks in. Fry for about 90 seconds each side or until golden brown. Serve with marinara sauce!
Tips
  • To test if your oil is hot enough to fry, stick the end of a wooden spoon in the oil. If bubbles quickly rise, it’s hot enough. In my cast iron skillet, it took about 5 minutes to get hot enough.

Would these turn out good if you spritzed them with EVOO and then cooked in the air fryer? Also, at what point could you freeze these?
