Ingredients
For the cake
  • 2 cups all purpose flour, sifted
  • 1 cup dark cocoa powder
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup vegetable oil*
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup buttermilk*
  • 1/3 cup warm coffee
For the frosting
  • 1 3/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/3 cup cream cheese, room temperature
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2/3 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup warm coffee
  • 1 1/2 cups cocoa powder
Instructions
For the cake
Prepare two 8 inch cake pan greased with butter or use nonstick cooking spray. Set aside, preheat oven to 350F.
Sift dry ingredients before weighing and mix flour, dark cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Set aside.
In a separate bowl, mix the eggs, oil and buttermilk. Pour in the wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix it until no lumps remain. Once everything is incorporated, pour in the coffee and mix well. Do not overmix the batter.
Pour it in the prepared cake pan and bake for 30mins or place a toothpick or a knife in the center and when it comes out clean, you're good to go! Transfer it to a cooling rack and let it cool completely.
While cooling down the cake, make your frosting by mixing the butter and cream cheese til it's fully incorporated. Add in the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, coffee and salt. Mix until combined and fluffy.
Make sure the cake has completely cooled down before frosting. Chill for about 30 minutes before slicing. Enjoy!
Tips
  • *If you don't have vegetable oil, you can use canola oil.
  • *If you don't have buttermilk, you can always make your own! (Don't worry, i always make mine lol) Just mix 1 cup of whole milk with 1 tsp of lemon juice or vinegar. Let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes.

Sounds wonderful, but please check the amount of butter for the icing. Is it 1 3/4 cups of butter, or sticks of butter? Thanks in advance. I want to make this!

    • There is more caffeine in the cocoa powder than there is in the scant amount of coffee in this cake. People forget how much caffeine is in chocolate. If you want to get technical, never give kids chocolate except in small quantities. Check the ingredient list on the container.

When I was a waitress in college, I worked a swing shift at a popular 24 hour swanky diner. And worked "bar rush" (alcohol cut off is 2 a.m.) and when asking what they want to drink, they would say no coffee, to much caffeine. Then proceeded to order a schooner of regular coke which contains way more caffeine than a cup of coffe.
