Stove Top Granola With Orange Zest
I love homemade granola because it tastes much better than store bought, you get to control the ingredients, the flavors are exactly as you’d like them and they’re easy to make. But don’t get me wrong, sometimes cranking up the oven and having to guard the granola for almost an hour can be exhausting especially during summer weather. Which is how I typically make it, in the oven but when I’m on a time crunch, I like making it stove top.
This is truly the easiest method for making homemade granola. The best part of it is that you can make this your own just by adding your favorite stir-ins. If you don’t like almonds, add pecans, use your favorite dried fruit, let your imagination and taste buds run wild. Granola is so versatile and the ingredients are limitless, it’s all about what you want them to taste like.
With that being said, I decided to add orange zest to this recipe, the flavor was incredible and the aroma was out of this world. Especially in combination with some of my favorite fall ingredients, like nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, and figs.
So, if you’ve ever thought that making granola was a winter recipe because of the slow roasting oven method that’s typically needed, than you need to try this. If you love granola, you will love this. I think the stove top method is most definitely the way to go, especially for smaller batches. By the way, I always only use USDA organic and non GMO ingredients when I cook. I really believe it makes a difference to my health and to the flavors of food. I hope you enjoy!

- Prep time: 10 Minutes|Cook time: 20 Minutes|Total time: 30 Minutes
- In a cast iron skillet/pan, over medium heat, add the coconut oil. Once it melts, add the oats and stir continuously until the oats are coated with the oil. Careful not to burn.
- Add the coconut flakes and stir continuously.
- Add the nuts and stir all ingredients until they’re golden brown or to your liking. It typically takes approximately 20 minutes to achieve a nice golden color.
- Add the ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon and stir to ensure every oat, coconut flake and nuts are coated with the spices.
- Add the fruit and stir well.
- Add the maple syrup, the vanilla and stir to incorporate every ingredient well.
- Add the orange zest and continue to stir until you’ve coated all ingredients with the zest.
- Completely cool before storing.
- You can add any dried fruit of your choice but for this recipe I added figs, apricots, golden raisins, and cranberries.
- For this recipe, I added, almonds, pumpkin seeds, pistachios and sunflower seeds. I also toasted the nuts separately for a few minutes to prevent my oats from getting too toasty (opt).
- I use a cast iron because I think it heats up more consistently.
- Allow granola to completely cool before storing. I find this keeps the granola crunchy longer. I transfer it into a baking sheet and let it sit at room temperature over night before storing in a glass container with a lid.
- If you’re watching your fat intake, I have toasted the oats without oil but I like the flavor that coconut oil gives to the oats.
