Ingredients
Filling
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 1.5 kg minced meat
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1 kg canned crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp chili flakes
Pastry
  • 800 grams pie pastry
  • 1 egg, mixed well (for basting)
Instructions

Over a medium heat, in a large pot, fry the onion and chopped tomatoes with a dash of olive oil. Keep stirring until soft and starting to caramelize. This should take around 5 minutes.
Add in the meat, salt and pepper. Mix in well until fully incorporated and the meat begins to cook. Keep stirring until most of the meat turns brown, this should take around 10 minutes.
Add in the 1 canned crushed tomatoes, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika and chili flakes. Lower the heat to low and place the lid on the pot. Let the meat simmer for 20 mins.
In the meantime preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (355 degrees Fahrenheit).
Spray a deep oven-safe dish with oil and prepare the pastry. Line the bottom and the sides of the dish with pastry, leaving enough to cover the top as well.
Once the meat is ready, pour it into the prepared dish and cover the top with the remaining pastry.
Use a basting brush to baste the top pastry with egg.
Place the dish in the preheated oven and let the pastry bake for around 25 mins or until golden brown (this will vary based on the oven you are using).
Remove from the oven and serve hot.
